Tanzania Gap Team ready for work

Quest News

The 2011 Tanzania Gap Year is well and truly underway!  Dom, Emily, Haydn, Kari and Lorna touched down at Kilimanjaro Airport on Friday evening and have spent the weekend preparing for work and acclimatising to the temperature (not to mention getting used to the rice and beans diet!)

Thunderstorms are the byword in Babati at this time of year, so the team are putting up with getting a little wet now and then.  So far, the volunteers have been learning to milk a cow on the school farm on which they are helping to improve the infrastructure.  This farm enables Wa’angwaray Primary School to be to some extent self-sufficient: the crops and animals not only can provide food for the pupils, but it also provides the school with a product they can sell in the local market for profit.  The farm is also an educational tool for the school and community to learn about different ways of using agriculture and animal husbandry to benefit themselves.

Watch out for more team updates in the coming weeks…
